Captain, US-Navy, Ret.; master of science in nuclear engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1956; testpilot school in Farnborough, England; in the Navy, he was one of the main test pilots for the A-6 Intruder; 1962 for military astronaut - class-2 selected; he also worked on the Nuclear powered bomber (the NB-36), flew the F-4 in Viet Nam, was Captain of an Amphibious Assault Ship the USS Francis Marion from July 1969 through July 1970; later severed at the Weapons Systems Test Division at Naval Air Training Center in Patuxent River, Maryland; after that he worked for the Northrop B-2 program, the F/A 18 and YF-23; he retired from Northrop in December of 1994; until his death he enjoyed his recreational interests as flying and restoring a Curtiss SB2C "Helldiver".
